چکیده

We present fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron star mergers with a temperature and composition dependent nuclear equation of state. We study the dynamical mass ejection from both quasi-circular and dynamical-capture eccentric mergers. We systematically vary the level of our treatment of the microphysics to isolate the effects of neutrino cooling and heating and we compute the nucleosynthetic yields of the ejecta. We find that eccentric binaries can eject significantly more material than quasi-circular binaries and generate bright infrared and radio emission. In all our simulations the outflow is composed of a combination of tidallyand shock-driven ejecta, mostly distributed over a broad ∼ 60◦ angle from the orbital plane, and, to a lesser extent, by thermally driven winds at high latitudes. Ejecta from eccentric mergers are typically more neutron rich than those of quasi-circular mergers. We find neutrino cooling and heating to affect, quantitatively and qualitatively, composition, morphology, and total mass of the outflows. This is also reflected in the infrared and radio signatures of the binary. The final nucleosynthetic yields of the ejecta are robust and insensitive to input physics or merger type in the regions of the second and third r-process peaks. The yields for elements on the first peak vary between our simulations, but none of our models is able to explain the Solar abundances of first-peak elements without invoking additional first-peak contributions from either neutrino and viscously-driven winds operating on longer timescales after the mergers, or from core-collapse supernovae.

Estimating the Contribution of Dynamical Ejecta in the Kilonova Associated with GW170817

The source of the gravitational-wave (GW) signal GW170817, very likely a binary neutron star merger, was also observed electromagnetically, providing the first multi-messenger observations of this type. The two-week-long electromagnetic (EM) counterpart had a signature indicative of an r-process-induced optical transient known as a kilonova. This Letter examines how the mass of the dynamical ej...

The dynamic ejecta of compact object mergers and eccentric collisions.

Compact object mergers eject neutron-rich matter in a number of ways: by the dynamical ejection mediated by gravitational torques, as neutrino-driven winds, and probably also a good fraction of the resulting accretion disc finally becomes unbound by a combination of viscous and nuclear processes. If compact binary mergers indeed produce gamma-ray bursts, there should also be an interaction regi...

Relativistic SPH Calculations of Compact Binary Mergers

We review recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamics of compact binary mergers using relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. Recent results are discussed for both double neutron stars and black hole – neutron star binaries. The gravitational wave signals from these mergers contain a lot of information about the masses and radii of the stars and the equation of state of...

Contribution of High–mass Black Holes to Mergers of Compact Binaries

We consider the merging of high-mass black-hole binaries of the Cyg X–1 type, in which the O–star companion becomes a neutron star following a supernova explosion. Our estimated rate of mergers, ∼ 2× 10yr for the Galaxy, is relatively low because of the paucity of high–mass black holes. None the less, because of their high masses, these black-hole, neutron-star binaries could contribute importa...

Dynamical ejecta from precessing neutron star-black hole mergers with a hot, nuclear-theory based equation of state

Neutron star-black hole binaries are among the strongest sources of gravitational waves detectable by current observatories. They can also power bright electromagnetic signals (gamma-ray bursts, kilonovae), and may be a significant source of production of r-process nuclei. A misalignment of the black hole spin with respect to the orbital angular momentum leads to precession of that spin and of ...
